Papas sahagun Attitude
Papas Sahagun attitude affected everyone in the book in certain ways, for example papa sahagun didn’t want his daughters dating at an early age, util they were old enough to get married. This attitude of his affected mostly the girls because the girls wanted to start dating and be able to talk to boys but this was against the rules that papa sahagun had.
The boys on the other hand didn’t have as much rules as the rest of the girls had, they would have girlfriends and they didn’t have to get married if they wanted to have sexual intercourse. In one scene one of the brothers took his girlfriend to his room and had intercourse, while their sister Yolanda “Yoli” watched secretly. This became one of the main topics in the book because Yolanda would wonder why their brothers had more freedom then they did?, why did they have girlfriends? but the girls couldn’t have boyfriends?.
This made the girls act recklessly and made them careless, as an example Ana Maria had a secret that wouldn’t tell anyone just her Boyfriend Tito, the secret was that she was secretly pregnant she wanted to have the kid but her papas attitude scared her and made her think of another option which was aborting the baby. her Boyfriend Tito took her to a doctor in Tijuana B.J where they made her abort the baby, Yolanda was the first to know about this secret she was home alone while the rest of the family were at church. Ana Maria arrived at her house with her pants full of blood and cloths. Ana Maria was devastated by this because she felt guilty for what had happened.
I love this scene because it shows the effects of Papas sahaguns attitude, thanks to his attitude Ana Maria put herself in a drastic situation were she was obligated to abort her child when she wanted to give birth to it but was scared at the same time because she was thinking that Tito would be in danger if her family would find out.
